She was born in Syracuse. Mary was a former employee of Carrier Corporation, General Motors Auto Workers Union and Equifax. She was a communicant and Eucharistic minister at Assumption Church, where she was former director of Gym Dandy Thrift Shop, and she volunteered at the food pantry and bingo. During WWII, she was a sergeant with the Civil Air Patrol. Mary was a former Cub Scout and Campfire Girls leader. Surviving are her husband of 64 years, John Mathews; children, Christine (Dave) Mathews of Liverpool, David of Baldwinsville, Gary (Lesley) of Chelmsford, MA, and Timothy (Lori) of Liverpool; brother, Robert (Lil) Kompf of Syracuse; grandchildren, Catherine, Elizabeth, Margaret, Kim, John, Andrew, Alyssa, Makenzie, Conor, Brennan, Cara, Eliza and Amanda; and 23 nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 9 a.m. Wednesday March 3, 2010, at Maurer Funeral Home and 10 a.m. in Assumption Church, with burial to follow in Assumption Cemetery.
